At the Northern Rockies Lodge, we welcome guests year-round. The snow and a bit of chilly weather don’t stop us from having fun at Muncho Lake! Whether you like to go ice skating on frozen Muncho Lake or take a bath in the cozy Liard Hot Springs to warm-up, there are lots of activities to ensure you a pleasant stay at the Northern Rockies Lodge.

Skating

With the arrival of the winter ice Muncho Lake transforms into a vast skating rink. Sometimes early in the winter season, prior to any major snowfall, the entire lake can remain clear and fully accessible for skating (depending on the thickness of the ice). Throughout the winter we do our best to clear a skating rink for those impromptu hockey games or leisurely afternoon skates. Skate rentals are available for hotel guests at the front desk.

Cross Country skiing & Snowshoeing

Later in the winter, after a nice thick coat of ice and snow forms, we transform Muncho lake into a 5 km classic cross country ski trail. Snowshoeing is also possible and they are available at the front desk for those looking to explore the area even further. Be sure to check in with our staff regarding track and snow conditions.

Northern lights

With a little luck and patience, the Northern lights can be seen from September until early April. Bask in the awe inspiring natural light show in the pristine beauty of the Muncho Lake valley. Be sure to grab a good thermos with your favorite hot beverage and a warm pair of mitts, rumor has it the lights try their best to impress on cold nights…

Liard River Hotsprings

Winter is the perfect time for a soak in the nearby Liard River Hot Springs. Enjoy this renowned gem of Northern BC while avoiding the summertime crowds. Experience the unique thrill of bathing in the refreshing warm waters of the pools while taking in the solitude and beauty of the surrounding winterscape.

Sauna

To unwind after a long drive on the Alaska Highway, try out our Finnish wood fired sauna and enjoy an awesome winter experience. Stoke up the stove and relax in the heat followed by a quick cool down in the snow outside. Due to the pandemic, our sauna can be rented at two time blocks each day, at 10am and 5pm. The 2 hour rental comes with a crate of fire wood. (Please note, that the sauna might not be operational if outside temperature drops below -20°C).
